Many think that the things they need in this life are retirement funds, houses, and cars. But once you start getting these things, you realize these are not life’s most important things. How are you supposed to discover what’s in store for you?
In John 10:27, Jesus says my sheep hear my voice. We are entitled to listen to the voice of God, and we all have the ability to hear God’s voice. You could take some time in silence to tune in to the voice of the Holy Spirit within you.
If you practice that daily, as years go by, you hear him like you hear everybody else. You might hear him through somebody else, too. God will make His plan obvious if we seek him wholeheartedly. Since we are humans created the image and likeness of God
we know from childhood towards where we are going. You will have an inkling of what you will become later in life. If you had a dream or a purpose when you were younger and you lost it in the course of your life, this is the time that the Lord is asking you to
seek that call once again.
Another clear indication of what God is calling you to do is your joy from within. All are looking for happiness and joy. But a profound internal joy is a clear indicator of where your greater call awaits you. For example, Saint Agnes of Bohemia was a princess who was engaged to marry a king and was also proposed to by the Roman emperor of the time. But she found that her happiness and joy are in serving people. So, she decided not to be a political pawn in that marriage market and broke off the engagement. She later joined the order of St Clare of Assisi and became a nun tending the lepers, binding their wounds, and feeding the poor. St. Agnes could sense great joy in her giving nature when she was expected to marry the emperor. This same joy that led her to fulfilment in becoming a consecrated nun led her to higher levels of sanctity, as seen in her being canonized as a saint.
You also need to realize that the fulfilment of God’s plan for our will comes with a price. Jesus says denounce yourself, take up your cross, and follow me. For example, when he called Peter and Andrew or John and James, they were fishing or mending their nets
with their father. We see that they abandoned everything they had- their boats, nets, their father- and followed him because Jesus said I will make you fishers of men. Being fishers of men is the greater call, and the price they paid is abandoning everything they had till that time, including their previous knowledge and expertise in fishing and all their comfort zones.
We all have situations in our lives where we need to give up things for a greater cause. We need to pay a price. Our willingness to do that determines whether we become a person like the glorious St. Joseph or the normal carpenter St. Joseph. The difference between these two situations is massive. However, the price we pay is very low compared to the glory that accompanies the
higher call. God himself gives you the power to work for him and do what he wants you to do if you forfeit those little things.
